The Coaches Who Brought Chelsea to Trophies in The Roman Abramovich Era

After winning the Club World Cup title, the Chelsea trophy was complete in the Roman Abramovich era. Since the Blues were bought by the Russian oil tycoon, the trophy has indeed come to Stamford Bridge itself.

In addition to the money that seemed to never run out to buy a lot of star players. One of the things that is key to Chelsea's success is the existence of great coaches, although Abramovich is also known to easily fire coaches if they do not meet his expectations.

In total, Chelsea have changed coaches 15 times since Abramovich became the owner of the club. Of the many coaches, there are eight names who have successfully brought trophies to Chelsea's wardrobe.

1. Jose Mourinho

The arrival of Jose Mourinho was the starting point for Chelsea's success in the Roman Abramovich era. Chelsea signed the Portuguese coach after surprisingly bringing Porto to the Champions League in 2004.

Under his cold hands, Chelsea is known to be so strong in defense. They have lost just once and conceded just 15 goals in their debut season. Mourinho also successfully brought Chelsea to win the Premier League back to back.

Having traveled to Real Madrid and Inter Milan, Mou returned to Chelsea in 2015 and again led Chelsea to win the Premier League. In addition, during his time in charge of Chelsea, he also presented 1 FA Cup, 3 League Cups and 1 Community Shield. No wonder the British media dubbed him The Special One.

2. Guus Hiddink

After the departure of Jose Mourinho in 2007, Chelsea had signed Avram Grant and Luiz Felipe Scolari. However, the two coaches failed to bring a single trophy to Stamford Bridge. Therefore, Chelsea then called Guus Hiddink, who is known to be full of experience.

Under his control, the Blues have only lost once in 22 matches. The Dutch coach successfully brought Chelsea to the FA Cup trophy after overthrowing Everton 2-1 at Wembley.

Hiddink did not last long at Stamford Bridge because he was actually also coaching the Russian national team in preparation for the 2008 European Cup. Hiddink had returned to Chelsea in 2015 but failed to bring a trophy.

3. Carlo Ancelotti

Hiddink's departure to manage the Russian national team made Chelsea appoint Carlo Ancelotti as his successor. The decision proved right because the Blues were able to win a double winner at the end of the season.

They beat Manchester United in the race for the Premier League title and toppled Portsmouth in the FA Cup final. Ancelotti also presented a Community Shield.

Unfortunately, the second season that was not too good made him fired by Roman Abramovich. At that time Chelsea were actually able to become runners up in the Premier League under Manchester United.

4. Roberto di Matteo

Roberto di Matteo will certainly not be forgotten by Chelsea fans. In addition to being costumed for the Blues while still actively playing, this Italian man who first brought Chelsea to win the Champions League in 2012 after beating Bayern Munich.

Di Matteo was initially only appointed as a temporary replacement for Andre Villas-Boas who was considered a failure. Despite bringing brilliant achievements, Matteo's career only lasted a short time. He was sacked by Abramovich after Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League group stage and lost in the race for the Premier League title.

5. Rafael Benitez

Rafael Benitez became Roberto di Matteo's replacement after the Italian coach was sacked. His early career at Chelsea did not go well after he failed to win in the first three matches and lost to Corinthians in the Club World Cup final.

However, slowly the former Liverpool tactician was able to bring Chelsea back to compete with the Europa League title. Benitez also helped Chelsea sit third in the Premier League, as well as return to play in the Champions League.

6. Antonio Conte

Prior to Conte's arrival, Chelsea failed miserably in the Premier League after only occupying 10th place. Abramovich then appointed Antonio Conte as the new skipper following his success at Juventus.

Conte's election also paid off when Chelsea returned to dominate the Premier League. He also became the first coach to reach 30 wins in one season. Unfortunately, his poor performance in the second season made him sacked even though he successfully lifted the FA Cup.

7. Maurizio Sarri

Conte's sacking in 2018 saw Maurizio Sarri lined up to take charge of Chelsea. His early career at Stamford Bridge went quite well, going unbeaten in his first 12 Premier League matches.

However, the coach who is now dealing with Lazio failed to reap positive results in the rest of the season and only brought the Blues to a third place. Before being sacked by Abramovich after only one season in charge of Chelsea, Sarri had given one Europa League trophy.

8. Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel came to Chelsea in the middle of the 2020/2021 season. At that time Chelsea had stumbled under the tutelage of Frank Lampard. However, the arrival of the former Paris Saint-Germain coach seemed to bring fresh air for the Blues.

Tuchel was able to formulate the right strategy and succeeded in securing the top four positions. However, Tuchel's biggest achievement was of course when he gave Chelsea a second Champions League trophy after winning a duel with England against Manchester City.

His victory in the Club World Cup makes Chelsea now have all the trophies in the Abramovich era. In the Premier League Chelsea are still stuck in third place, while in the Champions League they have to meet Lille in the round of 16.

The eight coaches were able to show their quality by bringing Chelsea to various trophies.
